16-18 September: NSE meets SOffie in Helgoland
Dutch-German offshore energy dialogue continues in Helgoland
North Sea Energy (NSE), SOffie (System Integration of Offshore Wind Energy) and partners from the Netherlands and Germany are coming together from 16–18 September to explore the future of offshore energy in the North Sea.
Following an international exchange in Brussels earlier this year, the dialogue continues in Helgoland, with a focus on offshore wind and hydrogen, system integration, investment and policy, and knowledge sharing.
The three-day exchange will also look at where Dutch and German perspectives differ — and where they align. By bringing partners together across borders, the programme aims to strengthen mutual understanding and identify opportunities for closer cooperation on an increasingly integrated North Sea energy system.

Meet our partner: Aquaventus
We recently spoke with Robert Seehawer, Managing Director of AquaVentus, one of our partner organisations, about the role of offshore hydrogen in a more integrated North Sea energy system.
We discussed topics such as large-scale offshore electrolysis, hydrogen pipelines as future infrastructure backbones, flexible electrolysis, market design and the importance of cross-border cooperation.
We also touched upon what brought Aquaventus in NSE and how the integrated thinking Robert encounters in NSE is finding its way into German regulation.
Webinar: A Future-proof Resilient North Sea
On 9 July 2026 our partner TNO hosted a webinar on how to realize a resilient and integrated North Sea energy system.
This interactive session, hosted by Rene Peters, brought together key players who are actively shaping the future of the North Sea energy system: NSE Science Lead Joris Koornneef, Durgesh Kawale(TNO), Michel Dubbelboer(TenneT), Robert Seehawer (AquaVentus) and Ruben Prins (North Sea Energy Cooperation – NSEC). Their key takeaway: international cooperation is essential for a reliable and affordable energy system.

NSE Public Event 2025
On 26 June 2025, NSE hosted a public event to conclude the 2023-2025 phase of the programme.
In the EYE film museum in Amsterdam, NSE presented a visualisation and modelling of energy plans in the North Sea. The unique series of maps and scenarios show just how crucial offshore wind, hydrogen production, CO₂ storage, and the phase-out of natural gas are for the future of the Netherlands and Europe. A first-of-its-kind initiative offering insight and calling for action from the Netherlands and other North Sea countries.

NSE's international workgroup is organising an International Roadshow with interesting workshops across several countries. Either in person or online, the workshops focus on knowledge sharing and expanding collaboration across borders.

North Sea Energy Atlas
Developed within the NSE program, the interactive online North Sea Energy Atlas offers an international, data-driven overview of key sectors in the North Sea area: energy, transport, ecology, fisheries, and defense. It not only shows today’s energy flows, from oil and gas to offshore wind, but also reveals scenario's for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2050.
The North Sea Energy Atlas helps you to increase your understanding of the impact of the variables that drive the offshore energy transition. You can make your own maps based on your personal interest.

In 2025 we published 5 infographics explaining the main outcomes of our research in 2023-2025 from multiple perspectives.

During the course of the NSE programme we organised multiple videos and tutorials in which we explain and discuss the offshore energy transition in the Netherlands and Europe, seen from a wide variety of perspectives.
In March 2025 we organised a webinar, moderated by Rene Peters, to present insights on best practices in Offshore Stakeholder Engagement and Multi-use of space in the North Sea. Two topics that must be dealt with in the (offshore) energy transition, as the North Sea is among the busiest maritime areas in the world. The need for sustainable energy developments brings challenges and opportunities.

Our recorded five-part webinar series explores the challenges, opportunities and solutions for offshore system integration. Industry experts discuss how to unlock the North Sea’s low-carbon potential while balancing economic, societal and environmental interests.
Episode 1: NSE programme and roadmap
NSE energy experts Rene Peters and Joris Koornneef (TNO) elaborate on the progress of the North Sea Energy program. They highlight the steps towards a roadmap for offshore system integration as input for decisions in the near future about the energy system in the longer term. The webinar is hosted by George Wurpel.
Episode 2: Energy hubs and Governance
Energy expert Rob van Zoelen (New Energy Coalition) dives into North Sea Energy Hubs, which are expected to be important stepping-stones for large-scale system integration and are therefore at the centre of the NSE program. Lisa van Nieuwkoop (University of Groningen) explores the main challenges when it comes to governance, an important element when bringing new concepts into practice. Episode 3: Modelling & Markets
One of the most important innovations and a central element in the NSE programme: the North Sea Energy Atlas. Remco Groenenberg (TNO) explains where we are with developing this open access IT toolbox enabling users to develop their own cross-sectional scenarios in any desired composition of offshore energy system elements.
Market expert Sebastiaan Hers (TNO) shares an analysis of the international energy system, the market dynamics of the North Sea region and the techno-economic potential of an offshore integrated energy system. The webinar is hosted by Rene Peters.
Episode 4: Offshore Logistics and Safety
Science innovator Jonah Poort (TNO) and NSE Science Lead Joris Koornneef talk about the challenges and potential benefits of shared, optimized logistics between offshore oil and gas and wind sectors and on the safety issues that should be addressed. The webinar is hosted by Marcel Hoenderdos.
Episode 5: Ecology & Environment
Experts Mara Hauck , Anne-Mette Jørgenson and Joris Koornneef dive into balancing the aim for multiple offshore energy initiatives and their impact on the ecological and environmental systems in the North Sea area. They dive into how decisions in the development and planning of the North Sea can be guided and adverse ecological and environmental effects can be reduced. The webinar is hosted by Marcel Hoenderdos.
